Victorian-Era Royal Thames Yacht Club Silver-Plated Pint Tankard

Make:  Original manufacturer unknown, located near Sheffield, UK.  Replated by Cassidy's Silver Ltd, 1953 and 1975.

Age:  Late 19th Century

Construction:  Heavy commercial silver plate

Dimensions:  4 3/4" Tall x 5" Wide x 3 1/2"diameter

Condition:  Excellent vintage condition.  Rim has slight bend.  Overall patina due to age and use.  Heavy silver plating. Please see photos. 

Details:  Slightly flared straight sided tankard with smooth rounded applied handle.  Faint block engraving on body of tankard "R.T.Y.C", likely for the Royal Thames Yacht Club, the oldest yacht club in the UK, dating back to 1775. 

The tankard is stamped in two places with VR under a crown over the number 37 with PINT beneath, signifying that this mug was certified as a pint measure near Sheffield during Queen Victoria's reign (prior to 1901).  Silverplate hallmarks on bottom are not discernible, however, there are additional clear marks.  4/53 represents April of 1953.  C.S.L stands for Cassidy's Silver, Ltd, a historic UK-based supplier of heavy guage silver plated tableware.  The smaller 8/75 corresponds to August, 1975.  There are also some hand scratched numbers/letters.  

It appears that this tankard was manufactured and certified near Sheffield, England, and engraved for the Royal Thames Yacht Club.  Around 1953, the piece was replated by Cassidy's and put back in circulation.  It was replated a second time in August of 1975.  A strong piece with a good, heavy silver coating and an interesting history as well.
